Reviewed by Alex Jasperse (Muses Muse):
Detaching and re-combining musical elements from groups like The Crystal Method, Mint Royal and Squarepusher, UK-based drum’n’bass duo, Chaos Theory (Mike Chung and Chris De Mello), serve up a single that’s geared and ready to hit the dance floors.
Slipping into the comforting arms of an acoustic guitar melody, “Anything” proves to be something else once the drums are unleashed and ricochet into the foreground to catch up with the guitar. As things begin to move at full speed, Chaos Theory secures itself with layers of warm strings for the ride, only to pull back on the throttle moments later to let the beat take a quick breather. The introduction of a synth melody midway through hints at the possibility of things slowing down further, but the re-entry of the drums is enough to temporarily blindside the listener, allowing Chaos Theory to effortlessly pick up where they left off with a moment’s notice.
Stretching out the beat as the mid-way mark approaches, guest vocalist Dave Landers enters with a whispery Underworld quality, floating effortlessly above the instrumentation. While grainy synth lines repeatedly pulsate through the background, Chaos Theory gracefully dodges any risk of monotony on the instrumental front with the well-placed re-introduction of elements such as the acoustic guitar featured earlier on.
As a single, “Anything” is certainly a strong contender in the electronic realms. It is much more than being just ‘anything’… it’s damn good, that’s what.
The Verdict: 8.0/10
